{"id":6399,"date":"2026-08-23T13:06:14","date_gmt":"2026-08-23T13:06:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/control-h.org\/?p=6399"},"modified":"2026-08-23T13:06:14","modified_gmt":"2026-08-23T13:06:14","slug":"just-because","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/control-h.org\/index.php\/2026\/08\/23\/just-because\/","title":{"rendered":"Just Because"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I think I&#8217;d shared this before, but it came up across my feeds again, yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Psychology of Younger Gen X(1973-1980)\" width=\"580\" height=\"326\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cL8TyK9Grq8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Does kind of fit with what I was writing about in my <a href=\"https:\/\/control-h.org\/index.php\/2026\/06\/29\/agonizing-delusion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">review of buck&#8217;s book<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Things weren&#8217;t as great as you might think you remember them.  Actually, there were many things about the 1990s that <strong>really sucked<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This dovetails nicely into last night&#8217;s Twi^H^H^HX find that <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Death_of_Caylee_Anthony\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Casey Anthon<\/a>y came out sorta in support of Lindsay Clancy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With friends like that, who needs enemies?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the younger folks in the WTF conversation didn&#8217;t know who Casey Anthony was.  My response was to have him ask his favorite AI tool to tell him more about Nancy Grace.  Grok did a pretty good job, actually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>*Search X for Nancy Grace*<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And, yep, there&#8217;s clips about her analyzing the case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That the crazy discussion has moved from Cable News to various social media platforms doesn&#8217;t really change much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Something something doesn&#8217;t repeat itself but rhymes something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or you get big analysis pieces on places like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefp.com\/p\/everyone-thinks-lindsay-clancy-killed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TheFP<\/a>.  Kat Rosenfield&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefp.com\/p\/she-killed-her-three-children-is\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">piece<\/a> was pretty good, too.  (Though I do have to say that I think Kat might be turning off her core audience last couple of months;  those convinced they&#8217;re afflicted with perimenopause tend to be a bit sensitive&#8230;.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Really, Gen Z, you don&#8217;t need your own OJ.  Isotoner gloves were good.  Hertz Rent-A-Car was okay.  The <em>Naked Gun<\/em> movies were funny, but they&#8217;d have been just as funny without him.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I was actually in my afternoon class in a plurality-Black government class in high school when the acquittal came down. Either way that turned out, there&#8217;d have been people very unhappy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 90s wouldn&#8217;t have been any better if OJ hadn&#8217;t killed people, and believing that he didn&#8217;t doesn&#8217;t make it any better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What&#8217;s kind of surprising to me is that there&#8217;s such narrow focus with the algos when it comes to feeding content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meta&#8217;s properties decided that I really need to see a lot more Nixon content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do I have conflicted views about Nixon?  Absolutely.  Do I think he was the worst president ever?  No.  That distinction would go to Wilson or Buchanan, depending on whichever side of the coin came up.  LBJ and Carter were also pretty lousy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I&#8217;m sure that government isn&#8217;t going to fix the problem.  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2026\/08\/18\/nx-s1-5935458\/meta-child-safety-social-media-addiction-trial-opening\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">California is thinking about the babies, Nancy<\/a>.  Whichever way that comes out, the verdict isn&#8217;t going to &#8220;fix the problem.&#8221;  But a lot of lawyers will get rich.  And a lot of politicians will be able to cut campaign ads explaining how much they care about the kids;  almost as much as Nancy Grace, even.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I think I&#8217;d shared this before, but it came up across my feeds again, yesterday.
