{"id":693,"date":"2013-06-15T12:38:47","date_gmt":"2013-06-15T16:38:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/control-h.org\/blog\/wordpress\/?p=693"},"modified":"2013-06-15T12:38:47","modified_gmt":"2013-06-15T16:38:47","slug":"i-know-this-guy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/control-h.org\/index.php\/2013\/06\/15\/i-know-this-guy\/","title":{"rendered":"I know this guy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Somehow, someway&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday, I tweeted, &#8220;Go to Hong Kong? \u00a0Okay, if it&#8217;d mean good food, and a chance to put my fist through Snowden&#8217;s face.&#8221;<a href=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/wireStory\/ap-impact-snowdens-life-surrounded-spycraft-19410244#.UbyOiefVBIo\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Some comments I got on Facebook made me think more about it, and the more I think and <a title=\"AP Impact\" href=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/wireStory\/ap-impact-snowdens-life-surrounded-spycraft-19410244#.UbyOiefVBIo\" target=\"_blank\">read about it<\/a>, the more I want to punch the guy.<\/p>\n<p>From what I can tell, what the government is doing is no different than the highway department putting traffic sensors on a roadway. \u00a0You know, the wires spreading across all lanes of traffic that seem to be connected to nothing. \u00a0They&#8217;re there to monitor the number of vehicles passing over that point in a given amount of time.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s also speed sensors that make the chromakey displays behind the perky traffic girl show congestion on a roadway.<\/p>\n<p>What does she do when one goes from green to red? \u00a0She pulls up that roadway camera to see if she can see what&#8217;s up.<\/p>\n<p>Now, imagine if one of the little pissants running the state&#8217;s traffic centers alerted everyone that they were being monitored because of these cameras&#8230;&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Do I have some issues with the possible long-term retention of traffic? \u00a0Sure. \u00a0Separate issue. \u00a0I know that it&#8217;s tough for someone at this nincompoop&#8217;s intellectual level to understand. \u00a0(Or, for that matter, the average Hannity fan. \u00a0Don&#8217;t get me wrong, Sean is a genuinely nice guy. \u00a0I&#8217;ve met him more than once. \u00a0His big-time fans tend to be a little, shall we say, simpleminded. \u00a0Only NPR has the luxury of choosing its audience.)<\/p>\n<p>But I digress; \u00a0back to the issue of monitoring. \u00a0The now knocked-up traffic girl only goes to a camera when she sees that there might be a problem. \u00a0Analysts brighter than Snowden do the same thing for Internet traffic.<\/p>\n<p>As I told the folks on users, law enforcement generally <a title=\"Sean on Users\" href=\"http:\/\/users.757.org\/wordpress\/?p=25\" target=\"_blank\">notifies<\/a>\u00a0the provider whenever there&#8217;s an investigation going on. \u00a0Otherwise, that oh-so-cute fuzzy puppy pic your aunt sent you (because she won&#8217;t get on Facebook out of fears someone will steal her identity) just passes by unnoticed. \u00a0Just like your car would on the way to the liquor store if you took the Interstate.<\/p>\n<p>Stopping my babbling now. \u00a0What are the takeaways?<\/p>\n<p>1. \u00a0If you really want to keep something private, don&#8217;t put it into a computer, or say it over the telephone.<\/p>\n<p>2. \u00a0Punching Snowden (and the people who think he&#8217;s a hero) is a-okay in my book. \u00a0Not so much for what he did, or may do, but simply because he&#8217;s inciting panic unnecessarily.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Somehow, someway&#8230;.
