{"id":892,"date":"2014-01-18T11:41:51","date_gmt":"2014-01-18T16:41:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/control-h.org\/blog\/wordpress\/?p=892"},"modified":"2014-01-18T11:41:51","modified_gmt":"2014-01-18T16:41:51","slug":"hardware-crypto","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/control-h.org\/index.php\/2014\/01\/18\/hardware-crypto\/","title":{"rendered":"Hardware Crypto"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I went to see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shmoocon.org\/speakers#genuinetrust\" target=\"new\">this<\/a> after seeing <a href=\"http:\/\/it.slashdot.org\/story\/13\/12\/11\/1919201\/freebsd-developers-will-not-trust-chip-based-encryption\" target-\"new\">this story<\/a> a few weeks back.<\/p>\n<p>In my current gig (and I&#8217;m still more than open to something else <b>*hint*<\/b>), I&#8217;m planning to use these sorts of things for <strike>something<\/strike>.  <\/p>\n<p>I guess what I was looking to see was whether it might still be possible to use these sorts of hardware crypto devices to augment software, even if they&#8217;re insecure.  Yes, with my BSD mention, you might think that I&#8217;m a gray-bearded fat guy, but, I do remember the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pentium_FDIV_bug\" target=\"new\">FDIV Bug<\/a>.  Even if you somehow still have one of those chips, there&#8217;s ways to work around the bug, but still use the co-processor, not turning your Pentium into a 586SX.<\/p>\n<p>I was hoping to see plans for something like that.  On the lesser platforms that lack a buggy crypto device, you can still do everything in software.  <\/p>\n<p>No dice;  this was focused more on enterprise-grade crypto jank.  Very few people ever find themselves using such hardware.  Ever.<\/p>\n<p>But the presentation was still pretty good.
