I was looking back at what I’d written back in 2017.

On that day, I was writing about the reaction to the 2016 election.

Looking back at that, I have no absolutely no idea what connection I was trying to connect to with that. I think, maybe, I was thinking it was something to do with the 2016 election.

By the time I wrote in 2017, the morass that would have been the first bits of the Trump administration were already starting to swirl.

I could go back through to see if I can find some of the most egregious examples of overreach.

But, why?

Maybe I’d be smart to just forget most of those overreaches. But that’d require separating out what many of the same people excused with regards to the 2020 riots, and COVID.

But my reflex is simply to refuse to associate with the worst examples of overreach on either, or both.

Yeah, I’m just not going to associate with you, much less do business with you.

Maybe that’s unfair, but it’s all I can do in my position.

I’m subjecting myself to more Joe Rogan because I wanted to hear what JD Vance had so say, even though I voted against him.

Guy can speak. Can’t say that same of any of the other people on the major parties’ tickets.

I’m really following things at a distance. I’ll elaborate more in a few days.

Similarly, I’m glancing at the NFL scores. Fire Dennis Allen? Um, okay. But it looks like Mike McCarthy should probably go first.

*looks around for the entry where the Mike McCarthy offense-coordinated Saints beat the St. Louis Rams*

Um, yeah, I can’t find it right offhand.

Will I be long-appreciative to the coaching staff that finally brought a playoff win to the Coonasstrodome? Yep. Am I bored as hell by the string of teams that all look like it’s 2000 again? Yep.

Write about things that really bother you

A friend of mine once talked about a job interview he had. This wasn’t for any sort of really-professional job, and it was in Texas, so it makes a bit more sense. The anticipated parts of the interview had gone well, and it looked like he had a good shot at getting the job.

After the HR troll questions were finished, the interviewer thanked him, and said something along the lines of, “I’ve got just one more question, and it’s kind of a personal thing — What really pisses you off?”

This isn’t quite that, but, I’m sure there’s a nails-on-a-chalkboard thing for almost everybody out there.

When it comes to me at work, it’s the oft-proffered, “we have a requirement.”

Oh, yeah? Which one? Where’s it documented? Who approved it? How does it fit into solution design? What are the test cases that demonstrate its satisfaction?

I ended up working more yesterday to finish the ton of yearly training stuff for work. Of course, it’s due right after I’m supposed to get back, while I’m still technically “off.”

And I couldn’t get through it. But I did finally get into the benefits site so I can adjust the bits that are coming out of my paychecks.

Maybe I should do this by levels of annoyance.

  1. Human Resources. It’s transformed over the past twenty years or so from a position of trying to get employees what they need to do their jobs to one of creating labyrinth processes to keep employees so busy that they can’t be individuals. Yeah, we’ll help them get what they’re after. After they do these 98 courses that make them into exactly the sort of people we want them to be. During my workout, I got Creep by Radiohead. I’m thinking Fitter Happier might be something that’s on repeat for a lot of these folks.
  2. “Negative Impact.” This is an outgrowth from Dr. Santoro in college. In addition to whatever GE class he was teaching, he was really intent on making sure that his students could express themselves well. An “impact” is a collision. Learning to use “affect” and “effect” really improve your writing. With that in mind, “negative impact” started bothering me when I was writing mainly broadcast copy. Several years later, I was working with someone trying to “sexy up” language in something I wrote. He rewrote something, and used “negative impact.” My response was something along the lines of, “A negative impact is a vacuum; it sucks.” That was back when using such language in polite company, much less on TV or radio.
  3. Catastrophizing. Sadly, this is in overdrive until Tuesday. I listened to this yesterday, and found myself disagreeing with pretty much all of the guests. I did sent my absentee ballot yesterday.

I probably could continue pounding things out, but I’m tiring of trying to think of things.

I also need to go fill out more paperwork.

I’m not supposed to be doing this again, but I figure it’s something that gets me into the mood for the holidays, and next year.

Things this year aren’t as jam-packed as last year, but I still do have a few things on my plate. I do have some travel the first week of the month, but why am I doing this? Well, some of the things in the Ep. with Susan Cain on EconTalk kind of spoke to some of what I do.

Even after a disgustingly-long day, it’s something I can do to kind of even out my head, as well as stay on track.

A lot of what I’m going to do this year is really recycled stuff from a particularly-low point in life, 2017, but I do have a few other things I want to write agouti.

We’ll see how it all goes, I suppose. There are a few blank spaces left, so I’m soliciting suggestions.

But, off we go. Let’s see what happens.

All that said, I really ought to consider not doing this next year. Fifteen straight years is a bit of an accomplishment, I suppose. Maybe I’ve stuck to this to keep some connection to what life was before everything went to hell.

Obviously, that started immediately after I finished the first month; my dad died. But this was something I did right after getting married, so that, too, fits into major life milestones.

Do I miss having things better set out for me before I started? Yeah, a bit. But I’m not trying to go back to then.

A particularly uninspiring politician is running on a general saying of “not going back.”

Okay, but when what you’ve got is completely screwed up, you do need to review how you got to that place.

I understand, Lessons Learned aren’t good Agile practice, along with things like proper engineering, but…..

Do I apply lessons from previous years to the next effort? Yes.

Let’s see how it goes.

Holloween

Because I’m kind of feel empty now after putting together the vast majority of what i plan to write next month.

I made an offhanded comment on Locals about Taylor Swift fans knowing very little about 1989; Ceausescu who?

He was executed on Christmas Day in 1989.

Maybe going to the Victims of Communism Museum.

November is strange this year, with the month ending on a Saturday. No writing about what I did for Small Business Saturday because it’s the final day when I write the wrap-up.

I think, though, I probably should venture to write at the same general time every day this year.

I’m doubting it’ll happen, but it’s worth a shot.

Cyrillic Elimination

I think I figured out an effective spam filter to keep the foreign spambots at bay. I have no idea what the word is; I’d assume it’s some common word, but including it seems to have done the trick.

Maybe it’s because I’m not as opposed to him as I am Ofc. Harris, but I did actually watch all of the Rogan interview with Trump.

Don’t Know

I know I’ve gotten some incredibly negative responses whenever I’ve even broached Rogan, but I did watch through it. All three hours or whatever it was.

Just a ton of time talking about things I don’t at all about.

The bits about replacing the individual income tax with tariffs is interesting to say the least.

What will happen with the “payroll taxes?” Many, many, many, many politicians roll out things about “the rich not paying their fair share,” there are already many people who pay no income tax. NYT actually had a decent take on it here.

I’m wondering if eliminating voters’ confusion about what’s actually income taxes, and what’s contributions to the old-age programs might clear some things up.

Am I confident about that?

Not in the least. The “rich” will forever not be paying “their fair share.”

So, yeah, I put myself through all of that, and still haven’t made up my mind. That should tell anyone reading how much I dislike President Trump. No, I’m not going to call him “Former President.” It’s a title you keep. Jimmy Carter is still President Carter.

Bucco Bruce is back today, so I’m going to go watch football.

TGIF

Well, that’s when the writing begins.

But there’s been so much else I’ve been preparing for to get ready for the end of the year.

Watching On Patrol Live last night, there were two spots in a row for Christmas ads. It’s not even Halloween! Am I ready for trying to figure out something to do with my wife since I can’t have a Lexus with a bow on its roof in the snow?

That’s supposed to start after Veteran’s Day.

Seriously.

Halloween seems to kind of passe these days. I remember seeing things the past few years about trying to actually move the date because, you know, safety. Trick-or-treating should be at from 4:30-6:00 the last Friday in October.

Let’s erase the religious significance from it. You know who else tried to excise parts of history that didn’t really fit? The FP had a thing the other morning about abortion being a health care right, and forcing Catholic hospitals to perform them.

Thinking more about it, after my initial you-can-leave attitude, it occurred ot me that, no, they wouldn’t. They’d stay to help take care of people because they’ve got a purpose higher than whatever some politician sets.

But that’s as bad as Kavanagh being a member of the Knights of Columbus.

What can you do?

Senate? Yep. House, not that it matters in a district that’s been blue since the Northern Aggressors left in 1877? Yep. President? I still haven’t decided.

The WTF interview with Dan Crenshaw was about the best endorsement of Trump I’ve heard. (Interesting tidbit there, too, about RON PAUL(pbuh)’s strategy in the House that let him get things for his district, while still being able to vote against the larger bill…)

The interview with Reason kind of pushed me his direction, but then I saw some third party debate that reminded me of the things I really don’t like about him.

I guess the Trump interview with Rogan is up on YouTube, which might be better than dealing with Spotify, but I’m skeptical whether it’s worth three hours to still be undecided at the end.

I need more coffee, and this is meandering.

Still would like some more topic suggestions for next month.

Sore Saturday

Another week out of the way. I basically finished the big kludge I was working on for work, which required work last weekend.

The whole situation is um, strange. I’m caught in a strange place. No, I’m not talking about politics, where that description would fit for me with politics.

Maybe it’s something where I’m not really on anybody’s “side.” That, of course, makes me a legitimate target.

I’ve gotten polled a couple more times this week. Who are you planning to vote for?

I’m really not sure, but I’m leaning towards Chase Oliver at this point.

So. Trump?

Um, no.

I missed most of the Saints’ game Thursday night. Yes, it was my own doing, but I think I’ve improved this system’s reliability and performance by some of the things I’ve done. Unfortunately, that requires me to work most Thursday nights. I suppose when I fell into that pattern, Thursday Night Football wasn’t as much of a thing, but I forewent the Saints’ game to work.

Anyway, Sean Payton’s return to New Orleans was a pretty stunning success. The Saints’ readopting of boring same boring formula in use around the league. Andy Reid has done the same thing in Kansas City.

Obviously it’s effective. It’s also a bit boring.

Did you know that they pre-plan their first XX offensive plays?

Yeah, and I still don’t care.

Actually Got Lobbied

Got a random call from a 703 number yesterday.

It was someone working for the Republican candidate running against Don Beyer Volvo. This part of Alexandria has been a Democrat stronghold since the Northern Aggressors finally left in 1877, so there’s absolutely no chance he’ll win. I plan to quietly vote for Mr. Torres, but I don’t hold a lot of hope he’ll win.

The absentee ballot I don’t remember requesting is sitting next to my sinister hand. Actually planning to be out of town for Election Day, anyway, so it’s good.

I’m lining things up for what’ll be a busy month ahead.

I am going to write, but I have no idea what I should cover.

But I think I’m pretty much, actually, wrapped up with medical stuff for the year. Next year is one thing after another

Should I do “Dry January” since I’m already going to have to go get my insides scoped?

I should go do work.

Both Sides Are Bad

That’s a nicer than saying they’re both stupid.

After bailing on Trump’s interview with Sharyl Atkisson after hearing again, nothing worthwhile, I stumbled across Neil Cavuto interviewed Mark Cuban about his support for Kamala

They had a back-and-forth about Trump’s bad monetary policy…..without any mention of how really bad Biden/Harris have been.
Both candidate are relying upon just ungodly amounts of circulating money. Nobody ever expects that the spigot will ever close.

But it will. It has to. The maths don’t work otherwise.

Trump came out either yesterday or the day before with a proposal to limit credit card interest rates to 10%. Much like his pitches for no taxes on tips, and Social Security Income sounds good at initial listening, but they don’t fix anything.

Stop taxing tips? The deficit in Social Security gets worse; the “trust fund.” (That doesn’t exist because no politician has been willing to raise the retirement age even though life expectancy is now probably close to twenty years more than it was they bumped it the last time…) Social Security Retirement is out of money, and there’ll be mandatory cuts very soon, now. Taking off contributions on tips.

Meanwhile, nobody is willing to actually reduce spending, raise taxes, and raise interest rates.

No, NeoHips, the MILITARY INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX!!1! didn’t have a damned thing to do with every single TSA agent being a Federal employee.

But Kamala, and Alsobrooks are going to make sure grocers don’t soak consumers in pursuit of their 1% margins.

Nobody has a plan. That’s worse than it’s ever been.

Digging For Topics

It’s a Wednesday night, and I’m trying to figure out what I’d like to write about in November.

I should be figuring out what to do with lining up various medical appointments. Or fixing this NetBSD host. Or…

I did try to watch another interview with Trump, and failed to get through it.

I was very interested in this today. All sorts of interesting implications regarding law. The treaties, including Trump’s NAFTA replacement, all rely on Mexico having an independent judiciary. The changes being made right now really call that into question. Do the treaties still apply if the other country isn’t keeping up its end of the bargain?

It also speaks to treaties with the former USSR. Do they matter?

I’ve come to think, lately, that there needs to be more temporality to basically every single law/treaty/regulation.

Hmm.
